I feel like you are seeing the glass completely empty as opposed to a quarter full. I see something in that obsession for power evident in part one that quickly becomes consuming ego and rage with a light push from the Gods. He's less poorly written and more poorly shown. He's in a "beat 'em" up which didn't lend itself well to long emotional cut scenes. Remember Ninja Gaiden for the NES? Ryu slashed through a hundred ninjas and monsters to then have these emotional cut scenes. Inconsistent? Maybe...but, if I lost my loved ones and was given unlimited power to return to earth; I might just go after every perceived villain with a blood lust as well. I think there could be more to this character if handled more reflectively... .an asshole with reason..LOL

Quoting AngelsandDemons:
Oh come on. Kratos, an asshole? I 'd like to think he was drunk on power and developed a blood lust. HIs ego grew in 2 after beating an actual God (Ares) after he found out how he was tricked to kill his family. So, he flies off the cuff and tries to Kill Zues as part 2 opened which fuels his contempt all the way into 3. He's less of an asshole than he is at being dedicated to his path which he really cant step away from after killing a God. My only complaint is that you never really get a sense of his alone reflection as he's got his rage on for pretty much all three games. I think, in order to believe in the whole father son thing, you'd have to get some insight into how he was when he met his wife, fathered a child...perhaps that could be the reflection that opens up the reboot; it's just that, as it stands, we've never seen a reflective bone in that man's body....he does love his family though indicative in part 2 when he chose to embrace his family as he took on the harm

He's a prick who wrecks the entire planet with little to no growth as a character or understanding or self awareness of the shit he's done. All with this contrived ass set up at the end of 3 to act like he has some inner hope or some shit.

At best, AT BEST, he's a poorly written paper thin anti-hero (aka a badly written character) or he's an asshole.

Either way he completely breaks when held under any scrutiny as a character.
